72 Hours in Beautiful Belize on "La Isla Bonita"
The tiny island of San Pedro (made famous as "La Isla Bonita" by the Madonna song of the same name) is also known as Ambergris Caye and is inside the nation of Belize. Belize is part of Central America - to it's north is Mexico, to it's south and west, Guatemala and to it's east, the Caribbean Sea.
Belize City, the point of entry, is a direct flight from Dallas Fort Worth, and from there it's a short and memorable commuter jet ride to San Pedro.
Our family visits San Pedro each year as part of a volunteer mission my husband's work - Key Whitman Eye Center Plano - does, to help those suffering from eye illnesses that can cause preventable blindness.
Their local charitable partners are BCVI - the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired - who run missions year-round. A special thanks to Kim, Rik, Sharon & the rest of the KW Plano team for making us a part of this magical mission!
This mission and family trip has become a special thing for us each year. We've come to love the relaxed pace of island life, the kindness and sincerity of the Belizean people and the wonderful ocean adventures, food, and local tourism options for both adults and kids.
This isn't a "high-end" style beach vacay. It's more like going to a lake-house, but finding its in the middle of a blue ocean, somewhere new and magical. While there's luxury touches, it's mostly a laid-back vibe. And, it's quite affordable, especially with advance planning.
This 72-hour guide includes tips for where to base in Belize, what to eat, adventures to have.
It also shares a little about BCVI - preventing blindness among a population that's poor and lacks medical resources and I hope it inspires you to combine travel and giving back, wherever in the world life takes you.
Enjoy - and read on, to feast your eyes on a 72 hour adventure.
