Madrid & Marrakech: Two Cities, So Many Experiences
Each year, our family of four travels together to an international destination from our home in Dallas - something we start planning as early as the previous winter break. We take months to debate locations, itineraries, places to stay and experiences. Our kids are both under 12, so we balance excitement with itineraries suited to families - but we do try to make it adventurous! Last year, after looking at annual weather patterns, flights and costs, we chose to do a combined Madrid/Marrakech itinerary, choosing to arrive in Madrid, checking out one neighborhood, then jetting off to magical Marrakech (after personally calling multiple Riads months in advance to speak with the owners), then returning to Madrid in an entirely different local neighborhood, to get a full flavor of the vibrant Spanish city. This trip was one we'd do again in a heartbeat. Based on our extensive research and actual experience, I've included places we actually stayed at which included two @Airbnb/Short term rental flats (apartments), and also our own Riad in Marrakech, an absolute find and frankly so much better than the famed La Mamounia (spoiler alert). Marrakech is every bit as romantic as they say, and Madrid so energetic and vibrant that I almost hesitate to package them into one overview. So, I'll also do follow-on guides to each city day-by-day - but this gives you the highlights of how to structure this trip and where to stay (or how to find suitable similar spots). As always, a percentage of the proceeds from my experience will go to the Wanderslush Fund, a program that will give the gift of travel.
