Mexico City Escape: 72-Hour Urban Luxe Weekend
In this weekend escape guide, I try to decode the vast and complicated megopolis that is Mexico City (also known as Mexico D.F. or Ciudad de Mexico (CDMX)).
Nestled at a high altitude of 7,382 feet, this urban gem of a city combines vibrant modern and retro neighborhoods; an intense foodie and street food culture; and a vast array of avant-garde art, fashion and architecture experiences. However, enjoying it requires some advance planning and thinking.
Included are the practical deets (how to choose where to stay, how to get around, how to dress, understanding the neighborhoods and transit times) plus some of the moments, shops, foods, places I found most inspiring.
Two of the world's top 50 restaurants make the list, as do local spots popular with insiders.
A short and usually not very pricey 2.5 hour direct flight from my hometown of Dallas, this is a city I wish more people had the chance to experience and make their own. Despite the woes of the recent earthquake, I can confirm the city is vibrant, back on its feet and ready to welcome visitors to its different neighborhoods.
I wish to dedicate this guide to a beautiful woman, Blanche, the mother of our dear friend, that we met on our first trip to Mexico City.
Though she is no longer with us, meeting her and her extended family colors my memories of Mexico City until today.
The photo of her shows her on her wedding day many decades ago - and she stayed in Mexico City all her life, until her untimely passing - bringing up two sons and surrounding herself with a loving clan of relatives in a city that prides itself on a love for family, food, fun and togetherness.
